Cyber Essentials Certification

Cyber Essentials is the UK government-backed certification that proves your business has the
core security controls in place. Twin Technology gets you certified — and keeps you secure.
The scheme

What is Cyber Essentials?

Cyber Essentials is a UK government-backed scheme — run by the IASME Consortium on behalf of the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) — that certifies your organisation has five fundamental security controls in place. It’s designed to protect against the most common internet-based threats, and it’s increasingly required to win public-sector and larger private contracts. There are two levels: Cyber Essentials, a verified self-assessment, and Cyber Essentials Plus, which adds an independent, hands-on technical audit.

The controls

The five controls Cyber Essentials covers

1

Firewalls

Securing the boundary between your network and the internet.

2

Secure configuration

Setting up devices and software safely, not on risky defaults.

3

User access control

Making sure people only have the access they actually need.

4

Malware protection

Defending against viruses and malicious software.

5

Security update management

Keeping everything patched and up to date.

Which level?

Cyber Essentials or Cyber Essentials Plus?

Cyber Essentials is a verified self-assessment: you confirm the five controls are in place and it’s checked. Cyber Essentials Plus adds an independent technical audit, where an assessor tests your systems hands-on — it carries more weight and is required by some contracts. We’ll advise which is right for you.
